DIY - A healthy pasta dinner

Starter: Pan-fried haloumi, baby spinach, vine tomato and avocado salad

Main: Spelt (rice) penne with a roasted aubergine and red pepper sauce

Spelt: This ancient grain traces back to early Europe, before wheat hybrids appeared. It's also considered by some to be a subspecies of common wheat. Nonetheless, there is nothing common about the taste of spelt; its nutty, rich flavor and high nutritional value, make it an excellent alternative to whole wheat pasta. People who are allergic to wheat probably cannot tolerate spelt and should avoid it, although some wheat-intolerant people say that they are able to tolerate spelt. As a gluten-free alternative try rice penne which you can find in most health stores nowadays (try Wholefoods)

Start to finish: 35 minutes | Serves: 2-4

You'll need:
half a bag of spelt penne
3 large aubergines
2 garlic cloves, minced
3-4 red bell peppers
10 campary tomatoes
olive oil
2 packs of haloumi cheese

a bag of baby spinach
a large ripe avocado

In a medium pot cook the penne for about 15 mins. I like mine Al dente (firm but not hard). After it's cooked, drain, ass some olive oil, a pinch of salt and put aside.

For your main you'll need 3-4 red bell peppers, 3 large aubergines
(eggplants for those across the pond),
2 garlic cloves, minced and spelt or rice penne.
Pierce eggplant several times with the tip of a sharp knife. Place in uncovered baking dish, and roast for about 30 mins, or until aubergine is fragrant and collapses easily with a squeeze. Slice in half, let cool. Scoop out meat and coarsely chop.

Peel the peppers, and mix them with the bakes aubergine ragu. Gently mash them together. Add the minced garlic, a pinch of salt and some olive oil.

Penne sauce - I like mine with chunky pieces, that's why I
rarely use a food processor.

Mix the mashed veggies and garlic with the cooked penne.
Alternatively add some grated  Parmigiano.
And here you have it! Unpretentious, inexpensive and delicious Italian maincourse
For the salad - mix the spinach leaves with chopped vine tomatoes and avocado,
add some cider or balsamic  vinegar and olive oil.
I don't usually add any salt as the haloumi is quite salty already

While the aubergine and peppers are roasting  grill the haloumi slices in a dry frying pan over medium heat,  until they are lightly browned. Set aside.

Place the grilled haloumi pieces on top of your raw salad mix and
here you have it: A Grilled haloumi salad with spinach,
avocado and campary tomatoes

Smokers secret heaven

"A woman is an occasional pleasure but a cigar is always a smoke"
Groucho Marx

The Lanesborough's garden bar is an outdoor, heated area just below street level that's legal for smoking (both cigars and cigarettes). Tucked away in a secret corner of the hotel, the Garden Room gives the feel of a hideaway for illicit activities, think of a luxurious version of "behind the bike sheds"!

I became a fan of cigars in Cuba.
My favourite is the double corona Hoyo de Monterrey,
although in this picture I'm actually having a 2009 edition
Cohiba Behike at about £50 per stick

Only when you are in the garden would you realise it was there - walking by on the street its clientele is totally hidden from the masses. Quite right too...

Actually, the space is fairly well hidden inside too: reached from the basement, down a long, unsigned corridor. It has open fireplace, underfloor heating, cashmere blankets and a world-class range of cigars to choose from, as well as a fully functional bar.
I highly recommend the Cosmopolitan cocktail for the ladies.
It's exceptionally good there

Cigar aficionados can spend hundreds on a Cohiba Behike – in fact it's the only place in the world where you can sample them "per piece", so it's cheap at the price! A mindblowing array of varieties is on offer.

The atmosphere is always cosy and vibrant.  Management tell me it is one of the most popular areas of the hotel, so much so they don’t even take reservations. And it only accommodates around 40 guests.
The icing on the cake is the fact that the Garden Room is run by the wonderful Giuseppe, who is able to provide great advice on the optimal cigar/drink combinations.

Little wonder that the Garden Room won the Best New Hotel Bar Award in the Imbibe Hotel Bar Awards 2009. It's worth a visit – if you can find it!

Locanda Ottoemezzo - Italian gem

I fell for this Italian long time ago.
His name? Locanda Ottoemezzo and yes, it's a restaurant I've been flirting with for about 4 years.
This little beauty had me at hello. I remember I paid my first visit on a Saturday evening and was immediately sold.
Ottoemezzo has an excellent service, one of those menus you could order everything from and fun décor. It’s not the cheapest Italian, but not the most expensive either.
It might be standard in Italy to find a place like this, but mark my words, in London it’s quite a gem.

Ottoemezzo is up there with Zafferano  but is not a fine dining restaurant where waiters hover around you ready to top up your sparkling water glass. Its informality is its strength.
I went back to Locanda Ottoemezzo again  last night. To start with I ordered the grilled squid and rocket salad. I'm not a bonafide signorina but I still went for a primi piatti with the hope I would be able to digest it by midnight - a black squid ink linguini with crab meat. Both delicioso!

The problem with Italian food is that five or six days later you're hungry again:)..... which explains why I just had my first meal of the day...
My friend went for the goats cheese salad followed by a rich risotto with mushrooms and artichoke served in a Parmesan rind. The latter looked very impressive although it was too 'cheesy' for my fellow diner's taste.

Risotto

Having being fed a considerable amount of homemade focaccia with a moreish Ottoemezzo olive oil before my starter and main, it was impossible to carry on with dessert.

Locanda Ottoemezzo is a laidback sanctuary, perfect for a relaxed weekend dinner, while spotting some goodlooking Kensingtonians. It feels like you’re in some bohemian Italian’s home (Roberto Benigni fits the bill) – and that, can never be wrong....

Locanda Ottoemezzo is located on  2/4 Thackeray street off Kensington Square W8 5ET
